Not everyone gets to tell their story. "ME BY ME" is a platform for those who have lived through the system, fought battles in silence, and still carry the weight of incarceration. These are the stories that don’t make the headlines. But they matter.
The talent hidden within those walls is phenomenal—artists, writers, musicians, and creators—voices that deserve to be heard, stories that deserve to be told. "ME BY ME" exists to bring them to light.
ME BY ME
Anonymous voices from inside and beyond the system.
This project started in a prison cell.
Now it’s a platform for anyone impacted by the justice system—prisoners, families, ex-offenders, victims, and unheard communities.
These aren't just prison stories.
They're untold lives.
Regrets. Lessons. Hopes.
Real words from people who were silenced too long.
Raw. Anonymous. Unfiltered.
Because every voice deserves the chance to speak.
Prison isn’t just time served. It’s isolation, reflection, and survival. Writing gives prisoners a way to be heard, to heal, and to connect with others who understand. Every story has the power to change lives—inside and outside.
This began with two people who saw more than a prisoner.
Sarah and Eileen led SMART Recovery meetings at HMP Highpoint—not to tick a box, but to make a difference.
Their sessions were a lifeline. They gave space, not judgement.
They encouraged me to speak when I thought I had nothing worth saying.
"ME BY ME" exists because they helped me find my voice.
Now it's helping others find theirs.
The Reality Behind the Walls
In the past 12 months, 342 people died in UK prisons—92 by suicide, a 24% rise from the year before.
76,365 incidents of self-harm were recorded.
This is more than a crisis—it’s a system in collapse.
I’ve seen it.
I’ve lived it.
I know the weight it carries.
And it doesn't stop at the prison gate.
It ripples through families, devastates communities, and weakens society as a whole.
mental health crisis, while the prison population continues to hit record highs.

Most prisoners are released—but how they return depends on what happens inside.
Without education, rehabilitation, or purpose, many leave prison only to return. 60% of short-term prisoners reoffend within a year. Instead of preparing them for failure, let’s give them a real chance.
Creativity transforms lives, offering an outlet for healing, reflection, and growth.
Giving prisoners the tools to express, learn, and develop skills reduces reoffending and gives them a chance to contribute to society in a positive way. Every painting, poem, and song is a step toward change.
Crime doesn’t just affect the person behind bars—it affects everyone involved.
Through restorative justice initiatives, prisoners can take accountability and help repair harm. By funding education, creativity, and apology projects, we bring healing to victims, families, and entire communities.
Punishment alone doesn’t stop crime—opportunity does.
When we offer support, skills, and purpose, people are less likely to return to crime. Studies show that rehabilitation programs reduce reoffending by up to 32%.
Your donation does more than help individuals—it helps society as a whole.
Every pound donated funds art programs, literacy support, skill-building workshops, and creative rehabilitation efforts. This is how we break cycles, rebuild lives, and create lasting change.
Accountability is the first step toward real change.
Many prisoners want to make amends, but the system offers few ways for them to do so. Through storytelling, public apologies, and creative expression, we give them a chance to take responsibility and start a new path.
Each piece in Me by Me is created by someone with a story worth hearing — even if their name isn’t known.
To honour their privacy and allow their voice to be followed, every contributor is given a unique Contributor Code.
These codes appear alongside their work (e.g. MBM-004) so you can explore more by that person.
